While verbal agreements are technically valid, a written rent agreement is strongly recommended for both parties. It is legally required to be registered if the lease term is 11 months or more in most states.
An 11-month agreement typically does not require mandatory registration, reducing costs. A 12-month (or longer) agreement must be registered. Most residential leases in India use 11-month agreements for this reason.
Yes. If your annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh, your employer will require the landlord's PAN along with rent receipts for HRA exemption. Keep monthly receipts diligently.
